Ballajura Intergenerational Playspace – Weitj Park - Exteria

Weitj Park in Ballajura has been transformed into one of Perth’s most innovative public play spaces. Designed to support inclusive, intergenerational play, the $6.5 million redevelopment offers a welcoming environment for children, parents and grandparents to play, move and connect.

Exteria collaborated with Adventeering Civil Engineers and the City of Swan to deliver a suite of durable, low-maintenance outdoor elements that support the park’s long-term use and accessibility.

Challenges + Needs

The City of Swan outlined a clear vision for the project:

A truly intergenerational space that invites participation across all age groups.
Inclusive design that supports varied physical abilities and sensory needs.
A connection to nature through material selection and layout.
Durable, low-maintenance infrastructure to withstand heavy public use.

Design and Material Selection

Intergenerational + Inclusive Design – The park was designed around three themed play zones—Parkland, Industrial Vibe, and Nature Play—each offering distinct play experiences. From ninja courses and trampolines to water play and musical features, the layout encourages movement, creativity and connection at every age and ability level.

Durability with Visual Harmony

Exteria supplied a mix of custom and off-the-shelf elements that align with the park’s aesthetics and accessibility goals, including:

Basso Bollards and Play Bike Rail for safe movement and bike storage.
Access Table Setting, Parkway Seats, and Boardwalk Benches for inclusive and comfortable rest areas.

Skillion Park Shelter to provide shaded gathering space.
Custom Yarra 3 Toilet Building (supplied by Modus), offering clean and accessible amenities.

Each element was selected for its robust construction and low maintenance requirements—ensuring longevity without compromising on look or function

Collaboration & Project Delivery

Exteria worked closely with Adventeering and the City of Swan throughout the delivery phase. A collaborative design and review process ensured every element met the practical needs of the site while complementing the park’s visual theme and play philosophy.
