The Shelley Beach Playground in Western Australia, located along the picturesque Canning River foreshore, has been revitalised to provide a vibrant play space for families and children of all ages. Exteria collaborated with the City of Canning and Phase 3 to deliver a park shelter that complements the environment while offering long-term durability and minimal maintenance.

Challenges + Needs
During consultations, the City of Canning outlined key requirements for the project:
- A shelter design that integrates with the natural foreshore and playground.
- A timber aesthetic without the ongoing maintenance challenges.
- Consideration of different structural designs, including cantilever and skillion options.
- A balance between visual appeal, durability, and sustainability.

Design and Material Selection
Aesthetic & Environmental Integration To align with the playground’s surroundings, Exteria collaborated closely with the council to refine the shelter’s design. The Skillion Double Shelter was chosen for its sleek yet unobtrusive look, blending seamlessly with the foreshore landscape while providing essential shade and seating.
Durability & Low Maintenance While timber was the initial preference, Exteria recommended a wood-look aluminium alternative—offering the warmth of natural wood without the risk of rot, warping, or weather damage.

Key material features include:
- Frame: Fully welded steel with hot-dip galvanisation and Zinc Primer Powdercoat, finished in Windspray (Colorbond Satin) for corrosion resistance.
- Roof: Colorbond Custom Orb in Dune, providing durability and weather resilience.
- Cladding: Timber-look aluminium battens in Spotted Gum Powdercoat, ensuring an attractive, low-maintenance finish.

Collaboration & Project Delivery
Exteria worked closely with Phase 3, the project’s procurement partner, to ensure smooth execution. One of the critical decisions involved selecting the roofing style—after evaluating cantilever and skillion options, the skillion roof was chosen for its modern look, effective water runoff, and compatibility with the site.

A Lasting Community Asset
Now a standout feature of Shelley Beach Playground, the Skillion Double Shelter enhances the space by providing much-needed shade and a welcoming rest area. Its durable materials and thoughtful design ensure longevity with minimal upkeep. Exteria is proud to have contributed to this project, helping the City of Canning create a high-quality public space that will serve the community for years to come.
